SCRAMJETS – Supersonic Combustion Ramjets
Scramjet is the acronym used for Supersonic Combustion Ramjet. The difference between the scramjet and the ramjet is in the fact that the combustion takes place at supersonic air velocities (above Mach1) through the engine, due to the fact that at higher speeds, it is necessary to combust the air-fuel mixture supersonically in order to maximize the efficiency of the combustion process. Like a ramjet, a scramjet essentially consists of a constricted tube through which inlet air is compressed by the high speed of the vehicle, a combustion chamber where fuel is combusted, and a nozzle through which the exhaust jet leaves at higher speed than the inlet air. A tri-party agreement regarding increased cooperation in the field of defence related offsets was signed between the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Denmark on September 24th 2008. Representatives of the three aforementioned countries signed a document named “Best practice for the application of abatements in Offset” regarding the abatements or swaps of offset obligations. The agreement is the result of prolonged negotiations between the three countries and is an interesting development if we take into consideration that Defence offset policies is a rather complex subject which is greatly influenced by national defence interests and legislations, the current defense industrial environment and the technological capabilities and potential that each country wants to attain. The "New Balance" Of Netherlands' Armed Forces
The Dutch armed forces are on a constant process of transformation, the final objective of which is the achievement of a “new balance”. The notion of this quotation is the reduction of the size of the armed forces on the one hand and the improvement of their deployment capability on the other. The implementation of such a program is really challenging and it is becoming even more difficult if we take into consideration the constant reduction of the Dutch defense budget. In 2007 the Dutch defense budget was almost 1.5 per cent of GDB whereas in 1997 was 3.5 per cent. Read more...

Within this context, the key elements for a successful outcome are quick deployment, flexibility and the ability to react swiftly to unexpected opportunities and threats. This new environment requires a defence organisation with greater and more flexible military capabilities. The Dutch armed forces follow this pattern. Read more...

Industry and Market Analysis
Currently, the Dutch defence industry is undergoing significant changes. The main aspects of these are the constant efforts that the industry is doing in order to prepare itself for the future structure of the defense market, which will inevitably involve the consolidation of the European defense industry. This is the main reason why the Dutch industry has to achieve a fully fledged position on the European Market. The first phase of this repositioning of industrial priorities is placed in the industry itself. The industry should find a way to integrate in this new environment and increase its competitiveness Read more...

Bushmaster milestone as orders top 800
The Commonwealth has finalised a contract with Thales Australia for the delivery of 293
Bushmaster vehicles.
Thales previously announced the DMO was ordering 254 Bushmasters in August 2007. The
extra 39 are a recent additional requirement.
As a result, the total of Bushmaster variants ordered has now reached over 800. This
includes 736 for the Australian Defence Force, 49 exported to the Netherlands, 15 FireKing
vehicles to ForestrySA, and other smaller orders.
Chris Jenkins, Thales Australia’s managing director, said the extra Bushmasters were an
indication of the vehicle’s success.
“This order shows that the Bushmaster is very much in demand, and follows on from its
successful deployment in Afghanistan and Iraq.
“It is a versatile platform for many different capabilities. Thales’s engineering and integration
teams have significant experience working with a wide range of technologies that can be
successfully added to the vehicle.
“This flexibility means we can offer many capabilities to the ADF and other customers, and
they can rely on our expertise to meet and exceed their requirements.”

Special Focus: Greece I

Greece is placed in a rather unstable and crucial geo-political region. Being in the Balkan Peninsula, an area that created more than a few political disorders in the last decade, Greece has to be prepared to tackle with a considerably complicated and potentially precarious environment. Additionally, Greece has to take into consideration the new type of threats that had been introduced globally and has to do with the new notion of uncertainty that the nations and the international community are called to confront and which we usually call “asymmetrical threats”. Furthermore, Greece is the only EU member that is still having opened disputes with one of its neighbour countries. Read more...

Industry and Market analysis
Greece makes a systematic effort to create a viable defence industry. The main reason behind this political decision is to increase the participation of the domestic defence industry in the total military procurement budget. This is a rather important feature for Greece as it reduces capital outflows from the country, boosts domestic employment and contributes to extra value added in the national economy. Dozens of small or medium-sized businesses have been created in the last years and currently 15,000 employees work in this sector. Main activities of the Greek defence industry can be classified under these main categories Read more...

Special Focus: Israel II

Israeli Aerospace and Defense Industry: A Constant Process of Development. In a rather competitive international environment Israeli Aerospace and Defense companies play a major role in the global scene. One of the main reasons behind this tendency is the fact that Israeli companies should not except to sell the majority of the products that they manufacture domestically. Hence, selling in foreign countries is almost a necessity. This trend is accurately highlighted by the financial results of Elbit Systems for the year 2007. Only 21% percent of Elbit Systems’ products have been sold to Israel whereas the remaining 79% have been sold to foreign countries, namely, 24% to Europe, 36% to USA and 19% to other countries.
